Cottonwood Elementary opened in the fall of 1993. Cottonwood has twenty-six classrooms, a library, computer lab, multipurpose/lunchroom, stage, and gym. A unique feature to our school is three activity areas. Each area has a stove and refrigerator that allows teachers to conduct cooking activities with students. These areas are also used by parents and school volunteers to work with students, or by the students to complete joint projects outside the classroom. Currently there are 430 students enrolled with a staff of twenty-six teachers, sixteen paraprofessional, one principal and two secretaries. Cottonwood also houses two district programs, the Parent Child Home Visitor program and State and Federal Programs.
Cottonwood is a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, PBIS, school. Our behavior expectations are based on PAWS: Positive Attitude, Accept Responsibility, Work Hard and Show Respect. All students are taught the school wide expectation at the beginning of the year. These behavioral expectations are taught in the following locations: bathroom, hall, gym, cafeteria, computer lab, library, and playground. The expectations are reviewed after each break: Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break and Spring Break. Added this year was PAWS for the bus. Every student at Cottonwood will ride the bus during the school year, either as a regular bus rider from home to school, or on a school sponsored field trip. By adding School Bus PAWS to the expectations, it helps the drivers to provide a safer, more positive environment for all students riding the bus daily to and from school.
